General Info

There are over 8 000 miles of roads in Bulgaria that link the major city centers, the quality of these roads are generally good. Once you are off these major roads, you run into some smaller routes between cities. It takes about 6 hours to drive across Bulgaria.

Requirements

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for one year.

Speed Limits

Speed limits in Bulgaria are as follows: City – 50 km/h; Open Roads – 90 km/h; Highways – 130 km/h.

Rules of the Road

Traffic travels on the right and the police strictly enforce posted speeds. Trams always have priority and pedestrians have the right of way in "zebra striped" crosswalks.

Traffic Police

If a representative of the traffic police stops you, do not get out of the car - wait for the policeman to approach. You could be asked to present the vehicle’s documentation which consists in registration card, technical support card and third party liability policy.

Fuel

Fuel stations can be found along the main roads in Bulgaria every 10-15 miles. Most fuel stations are open 24 hours. Shell, Petrol, OMV, LUK Oil are the biggest petrol station chains in Bulgaria . Most of them require customers to pay at the cashier desk.

Tolls

There are no toll highways in Bulgaria.

Parking

On one-way streets, park on the right only. Blue Zone parking is in effect in many built up areas and tickets are used instead of discs. When outside of built-up areas, you may park off the road.

Restricted Countries

Cars rented in Bulgaria are not allowed to be taken outside of the country, exceptions may be granted for an additional fee. Additional insurance may also be required when traveling outside of Bulgaria . For more details see Drive abroad

Safety First

No matter where you are driving, it is imperative that you wear your seat belt. Almost all countries this is a strict law, but aside from that seatbelts are there to save your life, so make use of them. Drive carefully and slowly in wet and windy weather. If possible, stop and wait for the weather to settle down. Fully service your car before leaving and ensure everything is running correctly.

Equipment

You should always check the emergency equipment of your car because there are some things required by law: emergency medical box, fire extinguisher, triangle, spare tyre with rim, jack screw and lug wrench.

150 – First aid
160 – Fire Department
166 – Closest police department
165 – Traffic police

Remember always carry your driver’s license with you when you drive!
